About the Author & Editorial Team
“Real life with senior dogs, backed by veterinary science.”
Last Updated: December 2025
Golden Paws Care is a husband-and-wife project dedicated to the gray-muzzle years. We realized that senior dog owners needed more than just textbook definitions—they needed practical advice that works in a real home, verified by a real expert.
Founder & Caregiver
Founder, Senior-Dog Caregiver, and Editor-in-Chief
Phil Hughes is a professional video editor and the “hands-on” half of the Golden Paws team. He isn’t a veterinarian; he is the caregiver waking up at 2 AM when the dog is pacing, researching the best orthopedic foams, and tracking “good days vs. bad days.”
Phil specializes in taking complex medical information and turning it into clear, visual, and actionable guides for pet parents. His job is to ask the questions you are thinking about—regarding costs, comfort, and daily care—and translate the answers into the tools and articles you see on this site.
Phil’s Role
- The Caregiver’s Perspective: Tests all mobility aids, ramps, and products in a real home environment.
- Content Creator: Produces the video guides and visual tools (like the Sundown Mapper).
- The “Is This Practical?” Check: Ensures vet advice can actually be followed by busy owners.
Veterinary Consultant & Partner
Veterinary Consultant & Medical Editor
Dr. Sarah Kent is the medical backbone of Golden Paws Care. She is a practicing Veterinarian with over 15 years of experience and a special interest in geriatric medicine, pain management, and end-of-life care.
While she spends her days treating patients in-clinic, she serves as the Medical Editor for Golden Paws Care during her “off-hours.” She ensures that when we talk about supplements, symptoms, or anatomy, we align with current veterinary standards.
Dr. Sarah reviews our health content for accuracy, safety, and relevance. She contributes to Golden Paws Care in an independent educational capacity.
Our “Kitchen Table” Editorial Process
We treat every article like a patient chart. To keep information trustworthy and useful, GoldenPawsCare follows a unique 4-step process:
- The Real-World Question: Phil identifies a problem senior dog owners face (e.g., “Why is my dog slipping on hardwood?”).
- The Research: We gather data, product specs, and behavioral studies.
- The Veterinary Audit: Dr. Sarah reviews the draft. She flags inaccuracies, corrects dosage advice, and adds the “Vet’s Perspective.”
- The “Kitchen Table” Test: We ask, “Is this actually helpful?” If the advice is medically correct but impossible to do at home, we rewrite it until it’s practical.
Why Trust Us?
- We Don’t Hide Behind “Admins”: We are a real family with real dogs.
- Zero “Pay-to-Play” Medical Advice: Our veterinary insights are unbiased. We do not accept money from pharmaceutical companies to promote treatments.
- Tools Over Talk: We build custom tools (like our Safe-Dose Calculator) because sometimes you need a solution, not just an article.
- Senior-dog focus: Every article is written specifically with older dogs in mind.
