Canine Arthritis Forecast: The Joint Pain Index
Built by Phil Hughes & Dr. Sarah Kent, DVM
Some days your senior dog wakes up stiff, other days they move almost like their younger self. Weather, activity, flooring, and rest all change how much arthritis pain they feel. This Joint Pain Index is meant to turn those observations into a simple daily “forecast” you can share with your veterinarian: Green days for regular walks, yellow days for gentle pacing, and red days for strict rest and pain-management check-ins.
Use it alongside your vet’s treatment plan to spot patterns in flares (cold snaps, overdoing it on stairs, missed doses) and to adjust home comfort on tougher days. It is not here to diagnose new problems — it is here to make the arthritis you already know about more trackable and manageable.
Best used: once a day during flare periods, or at least 2–3 times per week for dogs with chronic arthritis. Pair your entries with the Canine Arthritis Symptom Tracker so your vet can see a complete picture over time.
Clinical Reminder — Dr. Sarah Kent, DVM: If your dog is suddenly non–weight-bearing on a leg, crying when they move, or can’t stand without help, skip this tool and call your veterinarian or an emergency clinic immediately. Those symptoms are beyond “arthritis as usual” and need hands-on assessment.
Use the Joint Pain Index Below
Answer each question based on how your dog is doing today — stiffness on waking, willingness to move, weather, footing in the house, and response to their usual medications. The tool will calculate a joint pain level (Green, Yellow, or Red) plus guidance you can use to plan walks, play, and rest.

⚠️ How This Forecast Works
This tool analyzes real-time local weather data—specifically Barometric Pressure, Humidity, and Temperature—to predict comfort levels for dogs with existing joint issues.
- Why Pressure Matters: Veterinary research suggests that when barometric pressure drops (usually before a storm), the air pressure against the body decreases, allowing inflamed joints to swell slightly. This can cause increased stiffness or pain in arthritic dogs.
Medical Disclaimer:
This forecast is an educational tool, not a medical device. It cannot diagnose arthritis or replace a veterinary examination. If your dog is limping, whining, or showing sudden mobility changes, please disregard this weather report and contact your veterinarian immediately.

How to Use Today’s Arthritis Forecast
- Green Day — Comfortable / Controlled: Normal getting up and lying down, only mild stiffness, happy to walk. → Keep your usual routine, but stay on good footing and avoid explosive play or high jumps.
- Yellow Day — Flare Warning: Slower to rise, hesitates on stairs, seems stiffer in cold or damp weather. → Shorten walks, use ramps instead of stairs when possible, and note the weather and activity level in your Symptom Tracker.
- Red Day — Pain Management Priority: Struggling to get up, avoiding weight on a limb, reluctant to move even for meals. → Focus on padded rest areas, sling support for bathroom trips, and call your veterinarian if this is a new pattern or lasts more than 24 hours.
Bring 1–2 weeks of Joint Pain Index entries plus your Canine Arthritis Symptom Tracker to your next appointment — patterns over time are often more useful than any single “bad” day.

Arthritis Forecast & Planning: Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I use the Joint Pain Index?
During flare seasons (cold snaps, big weather changes), use it daily. Otherwise 2–3 times per week is enough to notice trends. If your vet is adjusting medications, tracking daily for a couple of weeks can be very helpful.
What if the tool says “Green” but my gut says my dog is in pain?
Trust your instincts. No tool can see your dog the way you do. If something feels off, treat today as a “yellow” or “red” day and call your veterinarian for guidance.
Can I change my dog’s exercise based only on the forecast?
Use the forecast as a guide, not a prescription. Bigger changes to exercise, weight-loss goals, or medication schedules should always be planned with your veterinarian, especially for dogs with other health conditions.
Does cold or wet weather really make arthritis worse?
Many owners and vets notice stiffer movement and more discomfort during cold, damp, or rapidly changing weather. The forecast helps you match extra support to those days — warm jackets, traction rugs, and slightly shorter walks.
“When owners track day-to-day comfort instead of just ‘good’ and ‘bad’ days, it becomes much easier to tune medications, exercise, and home setups to what that dog actually needs.”
